A drone team from the Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science, located in East Long Beach, is headed to the national championship in the UAS4Stem challenge, after clinching the regional championship title in San Diego Saturday, May 13.

Sponsored by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, the UAS4Stem challenge requires teams to assemble and build the frame of the drone, solder the power system and configure the electronic components into a working quadcopter.

The Sato Drone Team Dragons is made up of five students: Tasha who is in charge of ground operations and manages the equipment; Bence the pilot, spotter and visual observer who monitors real-time video feed broadcast from the copter and identifies points of interest; Jacob, who runs flight operations; Eddie the pilot responsible for takeoffs, landings and manual maneuvers; and Melissa, the mission commander in charge of mission planning and execution.

After assembling the drone, the students created safety mechanisms common in aerospace such as checklists, processes and procedures. This required them to learn about troubleshooting, configuration management and aeronautical engineering skills in addition to executing autonomous flight operations.

The UAS4Stem challenge’s mission required them to assemble a rapid response small drone (unmanned aircraft system) to support a search and rescue and comply with special instructions such as conducting point reconnaissance in 30 minutes or less.

The Sato Drone Team Dragon’s will be heading to Muncie, Ind. in August to compete for the national title.

Donations to help offsite the cost of travel and supplies can be made on the team’s GoFundMe page.

Sato Teacher is Educator of Year

Sato Teacher is Educator of Year

January 26, 2017

Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science teacher Lenny Perez has earned a regional Educator of the Year Award and will advance to the state level of recognition.

Each year the California League of High Schools and California League of Middle Schools recognize 22 educators representing regions throughout California.  Honorees exemplify educational excellence and have made significant efforts to implement elements of educational reform in middle and high schools.

“It feels great, but it’s a little embarrassing to be singled out when it’s such a group effort,” Perez said.  “It validates our work, and I couldn’t have done it without supportive administration and a supportive district.”

Perez is a master teacher for Project Lead the Way, a leading science, technology, engineering and math curriculum.  He advises the Society of Women Engineers chapter at Sato, and has been instrumental in arranging visits to local manufacturers so that students can see engineering principles at work.  He also is arranging visits by Sato engineering students to local elementary schools next month, when students will engage in engineering design activities together.

Sato Academy Principal Mona Merlo nominated Perez, who was then chosen to represent Region 11 as Educator of the Year.  Region 11 includes Los Angeles County cities east of the 110 Freeway and south of the 60 Freeway, excluding Los Angeles Unified and Compton district schools.  Nominees may be teachers, administrators, counselors, or other certificated personnel.

Perez teaches introduction to engineering design, as well as a course on digital electronics.  He will attend a Feb. 24 to 26 state conference in Sacramento, where he will join honorees from the other 10 regions and find out who will be the statewide Educator of the Year.
